Living with Sleep Apnea
There is no cure for sleep apnea, so once you have been diagnosed it is something you have to live with for the rest of your life. Learning to live with sleep apnea is a matter of accepting that you have it and getting used to your treatment method. With continuous positive airway pressure device or a CPAP as the number one treatment for sleep apnea some people find living with it is difficult. This device can be obtrusive and annoying. The following goes over some concerns you may have and addresses some normal feelings.
When first starting to use the CPAP you need to go over everything about it with your doctor. Be sure that you know how to use it properly. Make sure you know how to adjust the fit. If it doesn’t fit correctly it could end up not helping you at all. Adjust it so you can sleep comfortably. Talk to your doctors about any problems you may be having with it and ask his advice on how to fix them. Ask your doctor if you can try other treatment options in combination with your CPAP. Sometimes other methods will help you enough to not have to use the CPAP anymore.
Some people are concerned that sleep apnea will change their life. It definitely will if left untreated. You could experience heart problems, memory issues and these could likely effect the rest of your life as well. People have had serious car accidents as a result of being tired due to sleep apnea. Relationships can suffer due to sleep apnea because you can become moody, be forgetful or even keep your partner up at night with snoring and tossing and turning. Losing your job could happen due to lack of sleep and being able to focus. Getting treatment will help ease your sleep apnea symptoms and allow you to live a normal life. You probably will have to wear a CPAP at night for the rest of your life, but it is a small price to pay for having the rest of your life in tact.
Remember that using the CPAP is protecting you from the harmful effects sleep apnea can have on your life. It is better to deal with an annoying night time device than go through life sleepy, cranky and possibly experiencing devastating physical problems, like heart attacks or strokes. There is no cure for sleep apnea, but you can eliminate it by using treatment options available to you.
